Saying Goodbye to 2018, and Hello to 2019
The end of December can feel like a bit of an “in-between” time. There’s not much more you can do to impact this calendar year, yet you still have a few weeks to go before you can officially throw the confetti and say, “New year, who dis?”
If you’re anything like me, you’re too interested in musing on the past and dreaming up the future to focus on the present right now. So, instead of being upset about not being productive enough, why not lean into your dreamy mood in a productive way?
The end of the year is a perfect time to really sit down and gain clarity around the year that has passed, and what you want for the future. Even if you think there’s not much you did this past year, you may be surprised by what comes up when you take some time to truly reflect. And, if you didn’t really do that much this year, reflection can be helpful to help you figure out what you learned from not taking action, and what you want to change from this year.
There’s a lot of end of year goal planners out there right now, but in my eyes, they’re all….a bit much. So I’ve created something pretty simple that you can likely do in about 30 - 45 minutes. If you’re not a big journaller, or you don’t anticipate having a ton of down time, you could easily turn these questions into a nice “icebreaker” for you and friends/family at some of the holiday gatherings of the season. You might be surprised to find what you learn about your family, friends, and yourself
Reflecting on 2018
Who were you in 2018? What did you learn about yourself?
What are you celebrating from 2018?
What life lessons did you learn in 2018?
What do you want to leave behind in 2018?
What are you grateful for from 2018?
Dreaming up 2019
If you had to pick a word or phrase to be the “theme” of 2019, what would it be?
If you brought more of that theme into 2019, what would be possible next year?
Who do you want to be in 2019?
Imagine it’s December 2019. You’ve had a gloriously successful year, and been exactly the person you wanted to be over the past twelve months. What would that look like in regards to….
….your mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health?
Remember to DREAM BIG in this section! Anything is possible if you dream it up and work towards it. Don’t let fear hold you back. Allow yourself to create a vivid picture of what your 2019 dreams are.
Alright, you’ve likely gotten some clarity, but you don’t want to stop there! You want to find a way to cement and come back to these learnings. Here are a couple of my suggestions on how to do so:
#1 - Create a concrete list of goals for 2019. Even if you’re not incredibly goal-oriented, it’s nice to record what you wanted for a year, and then to come back to it and realize that you did it without even thinking about it!
#2 - Record your goals, word/theme of 2019, and life lesson from 2018 somewhere where you will see them and be reminded of them. Examples of this can be:
A visual you can hang on the wall
Post-it notes on your computer monitor or bathroom mirror
An email that pops back up into your inbox (Boomerang is a great tool for this).
#3 - Set yourself up for success by thinking your goals and word/theme through.
For your word/theme of 2019, ask: “What could I do to live fully in alignment with this?”
For your life lesson from 2018, ask: “How can I honor this lesson in 2019?”
For each goal on your list, ask: “What do I need to make this a reality?”
One last thing to remember: don’t let fear get in the way when you’re doing this work. Keep your dreams for 2019 lofty and your goals even loftier. If you don’t even let yourself set the goals you really want, there’s no chance you’ll get it.
